Kankakee Sands, Willow Slough . . . . Bird -- List . . . . . Saturday, May 29, 2010
Twelve participants in Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Newton County recorded 80 species on a hot, sunny Saturday. We did well in the morning at Kankakee Sands and vicinity, missing only Upland Sandpiper among our target birds. By lunchtime, heat had greatly reduced bird activity; we didn't get much in the afternoon at Murphey Lake as the mercury soared to 90.

Fox Island IBIS sp. . . . . Bird -- List . . . . . Saturday, May 15, 2010
A partly sunny but increasingly cloudy Saturday morning attracted sixteen participants (but not that many at any one time) to Fox Island County Park, Allen Co., for a Stockbridge Audubon field trip at the peak of spring migration. We found 92 species including 25 warblers. Highlight was a PLEGADIS IBIS sp. that Rodger Rang spotted and the rest of us saw around 10 a.m. It was flying north at a steady pace, so could not be identified as to species. This is a first record for Allen Co. Highlights among warblers were GOLDEN-WINGED, CONNECTICUT and seven Mourning, which ties the second highest day count for Fox Is.
After lunch, I did a short loop into the east end, adding Yellow-throated and Black-throated Blue to make 27 warblers for the day. When I left the park around 1:30, I paused along Yohne Rd. and heard the Bell's Vireo singing in its usual thicket; we didn't find it in the morning, so that makes 95 species for the day at Fox Is. I proceeded to check Eagle Marsh to see if the ibis had dropped in there but didn't find it.- - The Fox Island list:

Salamonie Res. & State Forest . . . . Bird -- List . . . . . Saturday, May 1, 2010
Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Salamonie started out with five people; Ed and Cynthia Powers joined us for the afternoon after doing their program for the Master Naturalist Program at Salamonie. The low turnout can be blamed on strong thunderstorms before dawn and continuing rain until around 7:30 a.m. After that it was dry but gray skies and wind kept birds relatively inactive and quiet most of the day. Considering the unfavorable weather we did pretty well: 77 species, 14 warblers.

Stockbridge Audubon field trip, Fox Island . . . Bird List . . . Saturday, April 03, 2010
Fifteen birders enjoyed Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Fox Island County Park, Allen Co. on an increasingly cloudy Saturday morning. The wind kicked in late in the morning, and we completed our half day walk just as the first rain drops began to fall. Total numbers of birds were once again small (my mantra for the past three months), but we recorded 49 species in Fox Is. Most unexpected was a very early (but not record early) singing male BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER on the west side of the Nature Center which treated us to good looks.

Stockbridge Audubon field trip, Eagle Marsh . . . Bird -- List . . . Saturday, Mar 27, 2010
Fifteen birders gathered today for a field trip at Eagle Marsh in Fort Wayne on a mostly sunny but chilly day. We walked a 1.6 mile loop at the west end, drove the towpath trail to the east end, and there took another, shorter walk. We had a nice waterfowl list, but our best surprise was *90* Tree Swallows and one BARN SWALLOW perched together in the cattails off the Pump Road (there were additional Tree Swallows elsewhere to raise the total to 100). Total species count was 42.

Lake Michigan Lakefront, IN . . Bird - - List - - - Sat, November 7, '09
From Jim HawAnd here we thought that November on Lake Michigan was cold and you saw winter birds.
Eleven Stockbridge Audubon birders encountered most unusual conditions on the lakefront: sunny, high in the low 70s, strong SW wind. We started at Miller Beach and worked east to Michigan City, finding two excellent species, Black Scoter and Yellow Warbler. Beyond that, it was a very slow birding day.
The YELLOW WARBLER was first spotted by Steve Sarratore at the Indiana Dunes State Park nature center feeder area. All of us, plus Brad Bumgardner and Holly Meyers, got good looks as it flitted and fed in the bushes and trees nearby and bathed in the water pool. Holly obtained photos. Brad immediately checked and found that this is the latest fall record for the state by two weeks.
Our list (as far as I am aware or can recall; persons in other cars may have seen species of which I am unaware):Canada Goose

From Jim Haw
Seven Stockbridge members blew (literally) over to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge on a very windy Saturday. We recorded 53 species, well below average for Ottawa this time of year but understandable under the weather conditions. There were low numbers and variety of waterfowl; they are running quite late this year. Highlights were a distant and very uncooperative HUDSONIAN GODWIT which kept moving around so that most of the group did not see it, and a late Common Yellowthroat.

Fox Island - Fort Wayne - - Bird List - - - Sat, October 3, '09
From: Jim Haw
Eight birders turned out for Stockbridge Audubon Society's half-day field trip to Fox Island County Park, Allen Co. this cold, cloudy, windy Saturday morning. I wasn't expecting much under the adverse weather conditions, and for most of the morning, not much is exactly what we found. But in late morning, those of us who were able (and stubborn enough) to stay ran into two flocks of passerines, a small one at the far west end and a larger one in the mature woods south of the dune and west of the main entrance trail. Although we did not identify all the birds in the latter flock, it did contain a beautiful YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. This bird is the first October record for northeast Indiana. The previous latest fall date was Sept. 25, also at Fox Is., where the species nests. That was the big surprise of the day; total, 49 species in Fox Is., and a creditable 10 warblers.

Franke Park - Fort Wayne - - Bird List - - - Sat, Sept. 26, '09
From: Jim HawTen birders participated in Stockbridge Audubon Society's half-day field trip to Franke Park this morning. We faced dark, cloudy conditions early, some clearing by noon. It was easily the best songbird migration day of the fall so far. We totaled 59 species overall, 15 species of warblers--and very good numbers for the first time all fall (except for Jerry's day at Franke yesterday). After the field trip broke up, Sandy Schacht and I stayed into the afternoon and added four more species (Turkey Vulture overhead, Philadelphia Vireo, Winter Wren, and Am. Goldfinch along the creek in the NW corner of the park) to bring the total in Franke today to 63.
There were so many warblers, moving so rapidly, that it was impossible to record exact numbers. Numbers below are best-guess figures.

Chain O' Lakes State Park - - Bird List - - - Sat, Sept. 12, '09
From: Jim Haw
Seven Stockbridge Audubon birders found Chain O' Lakes State Park, Noble Co., very quiet birdwise but very active for mosquitoes on Saturday. We recorded 53 species for the day, 48 of them actually in the park, including nine species of warblers. And most of the warblers were moving at warp speed again, as has been the case all fall. But, although birding was not too good, we did find several good birds, notably a Broad-winged Hawk flight and a flyover Purple Finch

From: Jim Haw
Fourteen birders inaugurated Stockbridge Audubon Society's fall field trips by spending the morning at Fox Island Park, Allen County. We found that the mosquitoes have reached June numbers, turning us into a swat team.
There was one rather nice flock of migrants in the old gun club area early in the morning, but they were moving through the trees at warp speed and many birds were seen by only one or a few people. We found only one individual migrant in the rest of the park. Total for the group was 48 species, nine warblers:Wood Duck 3

Kankakee Sands, Willow Slough - - Bird List - - - Sun, May 31, '09
From: Jim Haw
Thirteen birders participated in Stockbridge Audubon Society's field trip to Newton County on Saturday, May 30. Making the three-hour drive from the our meeting place on the west side of Ft. Wayne, we arrived at Kankakee Sands around 9:30 and birded that area and Willow Slough until almost 4 p.m.
We concentrated on grassland and marsh birds, as usual, and the group recorded all of the area specialties that we tried for except Upland Sandpiper and Sedge Wren. Blue Grosbeaks were particularly good to us; we got great looks at two of the three males that we found. However, only a few saw/heard the one N. Bobwhite and the one Least Bittern, and some missed our only Bell's Vireo, which was not in a very cooperative mood.
The day's list totalled a below-normal 81 species. We did not have time to get into the best woodland at Willow Slough, but the woods we did pass through seemed exceptionally quiet. There were no late migrant songbirds, and only a limited number of nesting woodland birds were singing. We found only three species of warblers (Yellow, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-br. Chat), and missed such species as Tufted Titmouse, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and White-br. Nuthatch. It was nevertheless a good day for the birds we went for. Among our finds:N. Bobwhite 1

Ten Stockbridge Audubon Society birders (and rather more mosquitoes) enjoyed a warm, partly sunny morning at Fox Island County Park near Fort Wayne. We recorded 82 species, 13 warblers, including only a trickle of migrants. However, the BELL'S VIREO has returned to its territory in the old field west of the park entrance, along the east-west path through the middle of the field and a bit closer to the east than the west end. It gave us a very nice look. Equally notable was a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON flushed from the north side of Bowman Lake, the eighth record of this species for Fox Island and the first in May (five previous records were in April, two in August and September). From: Jim Haw
Twelve birders turned out early for Stockbridge's trip to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Ohio (formerly Crane Creek State Park). The famed bird trail did not disappoint, with 24 species of warblers, many in good numbers. Best birds there were several Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and several Philadelphia Vireos, one of which gave us stunning, close-up looks. A Little Blue Heron, a Snowy Egret, and a Black-crowned Night Heron were also of note among our 98 species for the day.

Nine members of Stockbridge Audubon Society enjoyed a fine day at Chain O' Lakes State Park, Noble Co., on Saturday, finding 81 species and 19 warblers. Highlight, though, was a pair of BLACK-NECKED STILTS just north of Albion. Neil Case phoned Sandy Schacht last night to report that he had seen one yesterday afternoon, so we went by the spot before doing the park and saw two. The location is a flooded area in a grassy pasture with cattle and a tumbledown barn on the east shoulder of hwy. 9 about half a mile north of the Albion Bowl bowling lanes at the north edge of Albion., or just south of Josh Owen Excavating. This is the second record for my northeastern Indiana survey area.
Highlights in Chain O' Lakes were a very early female Blackpoll Warbler and two Henslow's Sparrows. The Henslow's were singing in the grassy field in the SW corner of the beginning of the park road loop east of the entrance booth. Lake Michigan, Kankakee FWA Bird List - - - Sat, Mar 28, 2009
From: Jim Haw - - To: IN-BIRD-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU
Eleven birders participated in Stockbridge Audubon Society's windswept field trip to Lake Michigan today. We started at Michigan City harbor and birded west along Beverley Shores to Port of Indiana and Ogden Dunes. There was not much action along the lakefront, other than large numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers. Our highlights were two White-winged Scoters, one Great Black-backed Gull, and one Caspian Tern at Michigan City; about 8 Rusty Blackbirds on Beverley Drive; one Caspian Tern at Port of Indiana. We looked for the Spotted Towhee without success.
The lakefront being rather unproductive and rather cold and windy, we headed for Kankakee FWA after lunch. There was stilla very good variety and number of the expected duck species (we ended up with 20 species of ducks for the day), but no geese other than Canadas. One Lesser Yellowlegs and about 7 Pectoral Sandpipers along hwy. 39 south of 8, plus a Vesper Sparrow on 500W, Laporte Co. rounded out the highlights there.
